Leaky bucket / Food sensitivities

The Leaky Bucket & Food Sensitivities
Think of your body like a bucket that’s meant to hold nutrients, vitamins, and all the good things you eat. Ideally, this bucket should keep everything contained and allow your body to absorb what it needs.
But when there’s inflammation, gut imbalance, or genetic issues (like CBS upregulation), the bucket develops leaks.
Now, instead of absorbing nutrients properly:
-
Vitamins and minerals spill out
-
Detox pathways get overwhelmed
-
Immune responses become confused
Over time, your body may begin to react to everyday foods, triggering symptoms like:
-
Bloating
-
Fatigue
-
Skin flare-ups
-
Mood changes
-
Brain fog
This is how leaky gut and food sensitivities often develop—your immune system is on high alert, reacting to substances it shouldn’t.
⚠️ Why It Matters:
If the root cause (like CBS imbalance, oxidative stress, or poor detox) isn’t addressed, simply changing your diet or removing trigger foods won’t fix the leaks. Instead, you’ll keep reacting to more and more foods, even healthy ones.
One underlying cause of this can be a CBS gene mutation. When the CBS enzyme is overactive, it speeds up the transsulfuration pathway, leading to excess production of taurine, ammonia, sulfites, and hydrogen sulfide. These byproducts can burden detox organs and disrupt metabolic balance.
What makes a CBS mutation particularly tricky is that—even when you’re eating clean, supplementing, and living a healthy lifestyle—your body might still interpret those efforts as stressors. This is because CBS upregulation can drain essential methyl groups, increase glutamate, and potentially lead to excitotoxicity, where nerve cells become overstimulated.
The gut also plays a critical role. It works closely with the adrenal glands, and when the gut is inflamed or imbalanced, it can keep the fight-or-flight stress response chronically activated. This stress, combined with high levels of folic acid or folate often generated from CBS upregulation, may disrupt the methylation cycle further. The result? A depleted, overwhelmed system that may lead to Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome.

It’s no surprise that individuals with autism are often treated for anxiety, as their nervous systems can remain in a heightened fight-or-flight state, leading to persistent feelings of stress and anxiety.
In men, a CBS mutation can also cause issues with their testosterone.
