MTHFR part 8: Methionine Cycle

Before we start on the Methionine Cycle, lets recap a bit…

We saw that your B-Vitamins is really important in keeping the lights on and the cells doing what they are suppose to.

The vitamins needed in the Folic Acid/ Folate cycle is B9( Folic Acid), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin) and Vit D.

The vitamins needed in the Methionine Cycle is B6 (Pyridoxine) because it helps the liver detox properly through the Transsulfuration Cycle.

And the bridge between the cycles are run by B12 (Cyanocobalamin/ methylcobalamin).

In the MTHFR part 3: Folic Acid, B12 and B6, I explained a bit about the Methionine Cycle and Transsulfuration Cycle.

So about the Methionine Cycle…

The Methionine Cycle is another big cycle that runs concurrently with the Folate Cycle. Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid which enters the body through the food we eat. The cycle converts this amino acid into SAMe (S−Adenosyl Methionine), a methyl donor for numerous other reactions in the body. This cycle is also the main artery to the liver and keeping the liver health and happy.

“SAMMY” is the boss, not the CEO, but the one that tells the over 400 know methyl donors what action to preform.

Traditionally the methylation pathways has been comprised of the Folate and Methionine cycles, while the Urea, Citric and B4H worked with the cycle, however they can also work interdependently. The SAMe communicates with the methyl donors within the B4H and MTHFR A1298C & MTHFR C677T as well as the NOS. Apart from CBS there are other output for the cycle BHMT, MTR/MTRR and SHMT, and each one provide an alternative when the other is blocked.

The are 5 cycles or parts to the methionine cycle. The important once are the Homocysteine production and Transsulfuration. This process is regulated by Vitamin B6.
